Although Lawrence Kohlberg provided major ideas for psychological
research in morality for decades, today some critics regard his
work as outmoded, beyond repair, and too faulty for anybody to take
seriously. These critics suggest that research would advance more
profitably by taking a different approach. "Postconventional Moral
Thinking" acknowledges particular philosophical and psychological
problems with Kohlberg's theory and methodology, and proposes a
reformulation called "Neo-Kohlbergian." Hundreds of researchers
have reported a large body of findings after having employed
Kohlberg's theory and methods to the Defining Issues Test (DIT),
therefore attesting to the relevance of his ideas.
This book provides a coherent theoretical overview for hundreds of
studies that have used the DIT. The authors propose reformulations
in the underlying psychological and philosophical theories. This
book pulls together the analysis of criticisms of a Kohlbergian
approach, a rationale for DIT research, and new theoretical ideas
and new research.
Originally published between 1920-70, the aim of the general

From cafe culture to home schooling, remote community networks, and
smart cities, Wi-Fi is an invisible but fundamental element of
contemporary life. Loosely regulated, low-cost, and largely
overlooked by researchers, this technology has driven the rise of
the smartphone and broadband internet, and is a vital element in
the next wave of automation. Thomas, Wilken, and Rennie provide the
first comprehensive account of the social and cultural consequences
of Wi-Fi, highlighting the ways in which it has changed our homes,
communities, and cities. They discuss its origins as an
experimental technology, the conflicts generated around its
ownership and control, and the ideas and expectations attached to
it by technologists, activists, and entrepreneurs. The authors
reveal the ways in which Wi-Fi is an inherently social and
political technology, animated by conflicting aspirations for
local, public, and community control, and defined by private and
corporate interests. As this book shows, Wi-Fi has extended and
intensified our online lives while also promising a more inclusive
internet. Wi-Fi is essential reading for students and scholars of
media and communication, as well as anyone who wants a better
understanding of this ubiquitous and influential technology.

The tension between ruler and ruled in democratic societies has
never been satisfactorily resolved, and the competing
interpretations of this relationship lie at the bottom of much
modern political discourse. In this fascinating book, Thomas Wren
clarifies and elevates the debates over leadership by identifying
the fundamental premises and assumptions that underlie past and
present understandings. The author traces the intellectual history
of the central constructs: the leader, the people, and, ultimately,
the relationship between them as they seek to accomplish societal
objectives. He begins with a discussion of the invented notion of
the classical paragon of a ruler. Next he pursues the invention of
the countervailing concept of a sovereign people, and finally, the
need for the invention of a new construct - leadership - which
embodies a new relation between ruler and ruled in regimes
dedicated to power in the people. In doing so, he draws upon the
giants of the Western intellectual tradition as well as the
insights of modern historians, political scientists, sociologists
and leadership scholars. The book concludes with a proposed model
of leadership for a modern democratic world. Elegantly written and
masterfully argued, this comprehensive study will be essential
reading for students and scholars of leadership and democracy.
Hydrogen offers a promising alternative for supplying clean and
sustainable energy to meet increasing demands worldwide. However,
materials are key to transforming the technology into a viable
industry. Materials for the Hydrogen Economy describes the
technical challenges and the current efforts in developing
materials possessing the properties required for handling each
stage of the hydrogen fuel chain. Thorough coverage offers
newcomers as well as experienced engineers and researchers a
reliable and fully scalable foundation in this field. This book
covers all seven of the current hydrogen production methods, as
well as distribution, storage, and utilization technologies,
particularly fuel cells. It details the chemical reactions,
processes, types of feedstock, and commercial equipment involved in
hydrogen production. It also covers methods, membranes, liners, and
sensors used for separating, sealing, and purifying hydrogen.
Several chapters examine corrosion effects in pipeline steels and
other storage and transportation vessels, leading to discussions of
hydrogen permeation barriers, barrier coatings, and hydrides for
on-board hydrogen storage. The final chapters focus on electrolytes
and component materials for solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and
H2/O2 PEM fuel cells. Materials for the Hydrogen Economy provides a
broad review of material requirements for handling hydrogen from
production to market. It explores the development of these
materials alongside essential considerations and issues associated
with their deployment.

The economic, social and environmental implications of recent
changes in retailing constitute significant contemporary issues,
which are the focus of this timely book. "Retail change" deals with
the internationalization of retailing, the development of shopping
centres in the city and at suburban sites, and the growth of
"leisure shopping". It provides an up-to-date review of the central
questions faced by undergraduate students in planning, business
studies and geography. The retail environment of developed
economies has undergone revolutionary change since the 1970s, and
the process is far from over. In the book the major elements
central to contemporary retail change are developed across the
whole spectrum of spatial scales relevant to present-day society.
The first part adopts an economic perspective and focuses on the
process of business concentration and its increasingly
international orientation. This is followed by analyses of change
in the urban region, concentrating on the emergence of the great
variety of new retail forms associated with retail
decentralization. The planning implications of retail change are
developed in the third part. The future of the city-centre and

The surge of interest in cannabis-based medicinal products has put
an extremely high demand on testing capabilities, particularly for
contaminants such as heavy metals, which are naturally taken up
through the roots of the plants from the soil, growing medium, and
fertilizers but can also be negatively impacted by the grinding
equipment and extraction/distillation process. Unfortunately, many
state regulators do not have the necessary experience and
background to fully understand all the safety and toxicological
issues regarding the cultivation and production of cannabis and
hemp products on the market today. Measuring Heavy Metal
Contaminants in Cannabis and Hemp offers a comprehensive guide to
the entire cannabis industry for measuring elemental contaminants
in cannabis and hemp. For testing labs, it describes fundamental
principles and practical capabilities of ICP-MS and other AS
techniques for measuring heavy metals in cannabis. For state
regulators, it compares maximum contaminant limits of heavy metals
with those for federally regulated pharmaceutical materials. For
cultivators and processors, it helps them to better understand the
many sources of heavy metals in cannabis. And for consumers of
medical cannabis, it highlights the importance of choosing cannabis
products that are safe to use. Other key topics include: The role
of other analytical techniques for the comprehensive testing of
cannabis products Tips to optimize analytical procedures to ensure
the highest quality data Guidance on how to characterize elemental
contaminants in vaping liquids and aerosols Suggestions on how to
reduce errors using plasma spectrochemistry The role of certified
reference materials to validate standard methods Easy-to-read
sections on instrumental hardware components, calibration and
measurement protocols, typical interferences, routine maintenance,
and troubleshooting procedures Written with the cannabis testing
community in mind, this book is also an invaluable resource for
growers, cultivators, processors, testers, regulators, and even
consumers who are interested in learning more about the potential
dangers of heavy metal contaminants in cannabis and hemp.
